HNIC Themesong Gone from CBC?!
In probably the strangest piece of Candian news for 2008 the CBC was unable to secure the ongoing rights to the Hockey Night in CAnada theme song. WHAT?!
Yeah, Canada's 2nd National Anthem will no longer be forever entwined with families gathered in front of the television on Saturday night cheering on their favourite teams, watching Ron MacLean and Don Cherry bicker, and singing along to the theme song because somehow CBC was not able to retain the rights.
Crazier yet, once it appeared that the CBC was not going to find a resolution CTV scooped in and not only bought the rights to the song but purchased the entire tune for a reported $2.5M! It's a bit shocking, but... this means that we'll now be able to hear the anthem on TSN, RDS, and even CTV. The song will probably be played whenever Canadian teams are playing hockey on television including the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and beyond.
Here's Stephen Colbert's take on the situation:
DARN... Viacom took down the Cobert beauty... maybe if you search long and hard you can find it.

Jack Hanna on David Letterman
These two videos are some of the funniest David Letterman clips I've seen in some time. Jack brings a bunch of African animals. The end of the 2nd one is the best!!!

House Proud
So our little space may not be large, but we're quite content with it. We've grown more accustomed to our space over the last little while as we've completed some little projects that have made it more livable and conducive to our lifestyle.
Recently we were asked if we'd allow Steven & Chris to have a short segment on our place for their House Proud section and we obliged. Please excuse the robot.
A couple questions that have come up elsewhere include where to get the wallpaper and the brand of washer/dryer.

Flight of the Conchords
Near the end of August I had a scary little item on my calendar... a reunion. Yeah, that's right, we're all getting older and apparently we like to mark the milestones with celebrations. Hmmmm. Thankfully the high school reunion was much more fun than I was initially expecting and I was very glad to have gone. I might add, in case they're reading, that Kate & Shannon did a great job organizing the evening. And on top of their great organization skills, one might call them an organization duo, they introduced me to another duo named Flight of the Conchords.
Now if you haven't already heard, Flight of the Conchords are New Zealands #3 Folk Parody Duo. They used to be #2, but that's another story altogether. Some of their claims to fame include trying to promote acceptance, stewardship of the earth, and of course being the inventors of rap music in New Zealand.
I've included two of their more notable songs below. Enjoy.
NOTE: You should NOT be attempting to drink any sort of beverage or trying to carry on a serious conversation whilst watching these videos. You may very well fail. Nope... you WILL fail!

End of 2 Eras
Hard to imagine, but two eras came to a swift conclusion since the new year. The first was planned, the second was a bit of a shock to many.
On February 9, 2007 we sold our first home with the help of our realtors. Wierd feelings, but now that its' had time to settle in a bit we're really happy about everything. The place was only on the market for about 10 days when we received our first offer. We accepted it, and here we are, a couple weeks after the fact starting to pack up our lives. As to where we'll be next, that's a good question. Let me know if you have a good answer for it. ;)
February 22, 2007 saw the end of the other era, The O.C.. Seth, Summer, Ryan, Taylor, and the rest of the gang will have to live on in our hearts and DVDs. The summer-time series that could, could no longer. But the series finale was one of the best conclusion-style episodes of any show in recent memory. A few surprises, but overall a good wrap-up of the questions we all had.

The Loop...
It seems rather pathetic, but this is going to be the second TV related post, but at least this ones not reality TV based. Today we're talking sitcoms, new sitcoms.
I don't envy the job of trying to find a new television show that actually connects with its target. Earlier this season Love Monkey was doing just that. LM was a unique television show that didn't seem as contrived or juvenile as many of the programs that air week to week. The star was a young music producer dealing with the challenges of making it in a rather tough industry. He wasn't a superstar, he didn't drive a Bentley, he didn't live in a penthouse, etc. The show seemed quite real. Unfortunately it seems that it was too real for most of America as the show received little advertising or promotion and a mere 6 episodes were aired.
On March 15th I stumbled across the premiere of The Loop on Fox. Yes... I know... Fox. But I decided to give it a chance and ended up watching one of the funniest shows currently airing. The young airline executive constantly falling our of "windows" and having to land on "his feet" is quite humourous as is the rest of the cast and their various quirks. The Loop will be airing on Fox on Thursdays at 8:30pm.

Lake... like the ocean...
Currently there aren't many television shows that I watch on a regular basis, but two have grabbed me for a regular weekly timeslot: The Amazing Race and The Block. Surprisingly both reality shows, but if Alias was currently airing and Love Monkey hadn't been cancelled the mix would be more even.
Amazing Race, now in it's 9th season is an excellent show helping to broaden the horizons of its contestants and viewers alike. One of the most interesting (read: wacko) contestants of this season is Lake, a dentist from Hattiesburg, Mississippi who will help you by relating his name to the ocean if you didn't understand him. Hopefully Lake's horizons will be broadened from his experience on the race and maybe, just maybe, with time he'll cease to tell his wife, Michelle, to, "Shut the f@*# up!" Hmmm... now is that any way to speak to your dental hygenist wife? Click here to view their bio. Thankfully their are still 9 other teams involved in the race.
Now despite most reality television shows becoming completing boring and ridiculous as their ideas get tired and the ratings even more fatiqued The Block is surprisingly refreshing. The primary reason for it's refreshment is in my opinion the fact that the show was not created in North America. This ultimate renovating show was developed and shot down under in Australia. Since not everyone is aware of the show I'll give you a basic rundown.
A small apartment building, thus far consisting of 4 units (2 up, 2 down), located approximately one "block" from the beach is in requirement of massive renovations. The producers ensure that all of the units are of similar value and are appraised as such before the show commences. The show begins with four couples selected, each of which will move to The Block for the duration of the show. Renovation money will be given to each couple at the start along with various other items helpful for completing their renovation such as tools, laptops, cars, etc. The couples then have 100 days to completely renovate their flats and upon completion of the units each one will be sold at auction, a method often employed to sell houses down under. Through the 100 day dash the couples will have to completely renovate one room per week in addition to renovating common areas of the apartments. Now 100 days doesn't seem that bad to renovate an apartment but one of the catches on the block is that in addition to abiding by the local noise bylaws each couple must maintain their day jobs throughout the show. At the end of the competition each couple will keep the difference between the auction price and the reserve price (set at the original appraisal amount). The winning couple receives an EXTRA $100,000!
Season 1 of The Block called world-famous Bondi Beach home while Season 2 calls Manly home.
So if you want some refreshing 'reality' TV check out The Amazing Race or The Block.
